New York City's Marijuana Arrest Rate is Wildly Out of Control

Two of my colleagues, Deborah Small and Prof. Harry Levine, have analyzed New York City's marijuana policy in a major report released Wednesday the New York Civil Liberties Union. The chart appearing above pretty makes the central point, but check out Jacob Sullum's piece in Reason for a good general discussion of the report's findings and implications.

Also, Scott wrote here last night about an important side angle, why it's a bad idea to take out your marijuana to give it to police.

Yesterday's is a must-read too.

The report itself, and the authors' summary, are online here

Drug War Issues Arrests - Marijuana Policy

All because of weak and permissive parents and government

You have govt who doesn't want to regulate the illicit drug markets and parents who don't want to regulate their kids. In the latter regard, these parents are more focused on their careers or just want to be their kids' friends, and they let them get involved in every kind of mischief (including drugs). When the chickens come home to roost, they go on the sob circuit, appearing on Oprah then go crying to Congress about why the govt isn't doing enough to look after their kids. It's pathetic that the whole world has to pay for the sins of a few parents and the huge drug-testing, incarcerating Nanny Welfare State they have enabled to run amok. If you want your kids drug tested, at least have the guts to do your own dirty work. Shame on them!

It's a slave market

They keep piling people in prison to force them into labour and underclass them. Reparations should be made to all "herbal criminals".

THats simply amazing. I

THats simply amazing. I never realized New York suddenly was gun hoe about catching people smoking pot. Is that why the violent crime rate has been increasing? I think it's time new Yorkers stood up the issue. Many good people have had their background check spoiled for no good reason.
